History

The Independent State of Croatia issued a set of three semi-postals on 5 July 1942, headed POMOĆ — relief. One of the three carries the theme and is catalogued here: the 3 + 1 kuna dark carmine-brown showing two trumpeters sounding fanfare trumpets. Domfil lists it as 942.13 «Trompetas / Trumpets»; the other two values are recorded below as non-scout companions.

The banners hung from the trumpets carry the U of the Ustaša movement, and no Scout emblem appears anywhere on the design. The stamp belongs to the theme on the same footing as the state youth issues of Romania and Germany in these years: the Independent State of Croatia ran a compulsory youth organisation, the Ustaška mladež, and independent Scouting had no place in it. What the catalogues index is the bugler, the one figure the movement and its state replacements have in common.

All three values are photogravure, line perforation 11¼, without watermark, and all expired for postage on 31 October 1942, less than four months after issue. The 3 + 1 kuna was printed in 139,565 copies, the 4 + 2 kuna in 137,036 and the 5 + 5 kuna in 136,413. Further references for the trumpeters are Michel HR 83, Scott HR B13, Yvert HR 59, Stanley Gibbons HR 64 and AFA HR 69.
