History
New Zealand issued a single 3 penny commemorative on 5 January 1959 for the Pan-Pacific Scout Jamboree at Auckland.
The design puts a kiwi inside a white circle lettered BOY SCOUTS · PAN-PACIFIC JAMBOREE 1959, with the Scout fleur-de-lis at the upper left and NEW ZEALAND across the foot — the national bird standing in for the host country in a way no uniform or emblem could. S. M. Collins drew it and Bradbury, Wilkinson engraved it, in sheets of 160 made up as two panes of 80 with gutter pairs, perforation 13½ × 13, on paper watermarked multiple NZ and star.
SOSOW records a printing of 8,991,166 and gives 31 March 1959 as the date of withdrawal, under three months on sale. Domfil catalogues it as 959.1 «Escultismo / The Scouts». Further references are Scott NZ 326, Michel NZ 381, Yvert NZ 374 and Stanley Gibbons NZ 771.
Two pre-production items are shown below: a soft die proof in black, numbered 21400 and endorsed Soft-Die by hand, and an imperforate imprimatur block of four in the issued colours.
