History

The German Democratic Republic issued a two-value semi-postal on 28 July 1970 for the 6th Pioneer Meeting (6. Pioniertreffen) in Cottbus. Both stamps are inscribed 6. PIONIERTREFFEN and COTTBUS 1970. Each value carries a 5 pfennig surtax.

Hans Detlefsen designed a pair of wide horizontal stamps printed se-tenant, so that the two neckerchiefs meet when the pair is kept together. The 10 + 5 pfennig shows a boy in a light-blue cap holding a blue Jungpionier neckerchief behind his head; the Junge Pioniere torch and the letters JP appear among line drawings of children and buildings. The 25 + 5 pfennig shows a girl in a blue cap holding a red Thälmann Pioneer neckerchief aloft, with further line drawings of Pioneers behind her.

The Deutsche Wertpapierdruckerei (VEB) printed the set by offset lithography, comb perforated 13 × 12½, 65 × 26 mm. The print run is given as 3,500,000 of each value. The stamps remained valid until 2 October 1990.
