History
On 26 May 1977 the Isle of Man issued two commemoratives — the Scout values of a four-stamp Linked Anniversaries set — marking seventy years of the Tourist Trophy motorcycle races and of Scouting. Both stamps carry a silhouette of Queen Elizabeth II and are signed J.H. NICHOLSON R.I. and WADDINGTON. J. H. Nicholson designed the issue. John Waddington Security Print printed it by offset lithography, 44.8 × 28.3 mm, comb perforated 13½ × 13¾, in panes of 50 (two panes of 25 with a gutter). Sale was withdrawn on 25 May 1978. The other two values of the set are TT subjects without Scouts.
The 6 penny is inscribed F.A. APPLEBEE AT BALLIG BRIDGE 1912. Frank (“Pa”) Applebee jumps the bridge on motorcycle number 7 — the Scott on which he won the 1912 Senior TT — while a Scout in a campaign hat holds a yellow-and-red signalling flag.
The 11 penny is inscribed SCOUTS OPERATING THE SCOREBOARDS. Scouts man a long scoreboard beside a map labelled THE COURSE; a yellow fleur-de-lis stands at upper right. Manx Scouts have worked the TT since the early years of the race, later as the crew of the clocks and scoreboards at the Douglas grandstand.
