History
Labels lettered EYNHALLOW, HOLY ISLAND and SCOTLAND appeared in 1978 showing Scout paintings by Norman Rockwell. Eynhallow is an uninhabited island in Orkney. It had no local postal service. The labels were produced for or by Clive Feigenbaum, with the laird's permission, for the collector market; they have no franking value. Some of the Eynhallow labels were later used in a tax-shelter scheme in which the defendants were convicted.
Each label is upright and perforated, with HOLY ISLAND and EYNHALLOW in a coloured panel at left and SCOTLAND at right. The four values listed here are 4 pence (a group of Scouts behind a gold BSA fleur-de-lis), 9 pence (a Scout giving the three-finger sign against the words of the Scout Promise), 10 pence (a Scout in a campaign hat signalling with semaphore flags; another Scout watches through binoculars), and 11 pence (an older Scout with a younger girl holding a handbook, a faint Washington portrait behind).
The paintings were issued as a pane of eight (2 p, 4 p, 6 p, 8 p, 9 p, 10 p, 11 p and 50 p). Cancelled copies carry a circular SCOTLAND mark dated 30 March 1978. The printer and the designer of the frames are not established.
Notes
