Notes

The flags of the nations massed on a mast against a pale sky, JAMBOREE in black over FRANCE in green and the year 1947 beneath. Printer's line at the foot of the design: A. DELRIEU, IMP. at the left and J. BICKERT at the right. Attached below, se-tenant, an advertising tab lettered PILE MAZDA.

Series history

A publicity label for the sixth World Scout Jamboree, held at Moisson in a loop of the Seine near Mantes from 9 to 20 August 1947. It carries no face value and no postal validity: a cinderella, printed to advertise the camp and sold or given away with an advertising coupon attached beneath it.

The design massing the flags of the nations on a single mast is the visual argument of the gathering. This was the first world jamboree since 1937 and the organisers made it the Jamboree de la Paix — the peace jamboree — a deliberate answer to the war that had cancelled the two in between. Some twenty-four thousand Scouts camped at Moisson, and it remains the only world jamboree ever held in France.

The printer's line at the foot of the design gives A. Delrieu as the printer and J. Bickert as the artist. Attached below, se-tenant with the label, is a tab advertising PILE MAZDA, the battery brand — the commercial arrangement that paid for the printing, and the reason labels of this kind survive in quantity.
