Notes
A Cub and a Scout saluting before the Cuban flag, Cuban Scout badge with royal palm and the motto SIEMPRE LISTO at left, legend CAMPAMENTO NACIONAL DE PATRULLAS - BOY SCOUTS DE CUBA. Engraved by the Compañía Impresora de Cuba, panes of 50. Domfil 954.42. Print run 2,000,000 (SOSOW).
Series history
Cuba issued a single 4 centavo commemorative on 27 December 1954, in Havana, for the third national patrol camp of the Boy Scouts de Cuba. SOSOW records the issue as marking both the camp and the fortieth anniversary of Cuban Scouting; Domfil catalogues it as 954.42 under «3 Encuentro de escultismo en Cuba», motif «Saludando / Saluting».
The dark green design shows two Scouts at the salute in front of the Cuban flag with its lone star — a younger boy in the peaked cap of the Cub section in the foreground and an older Scout in campaign hat and neckerchief behind. SOSOW names them: the Cub Scout is Eduardo R. Almeyd and the Boy Scout José Antonio Mola, both posed from life for the engraving. At the left stands the Cuban Scout badge, a fleur-de-lis with a royal palm at its centre above the motto scroll SIEMPRE LISTO. The legend runs CAMPAMENTO NACIONAL DE PATRULLAS - BOY SCOUTS DE CUBA, with IMPRESO EN CUBA below it.
Enrique Caravia designed the stamp and the Compañía Impresora de Cuba engraved it, horizontal format 34 × 24 mm, panes of 50, comb perforation 12½, on watermarked paper, in a run of 2,000,000. Catalogue references are Scott CU 535, Michel CU 441, Yvert CU 416 and Stanley Gibbons CU 721.
