Series history
The Canal Zone marked fifty years of the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. with a 4-cent stamp issued at Balboa on 12 March 1962. The design centres on the Girl Scout trefoil with the GS initials and the organisation's eagle emblem, set against a Canal Zone shoreline of palms, camping tents and a distant peak. The frame carries 1912–1962 and the motto Honor the past Serve the future, with CANAL ZONE POSTAGE along the foot.
Five hundred thousand copies were printed. Designer Gerald A. Doyle, Jr.; engravers Matthew D. Fenton and Howard F. Sharpless; U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing; engraving with embossing in panes of 50; perforated 11.
