Series history

Italy issued a 50-lira commemorative in Rome on 23 April 1968 in honour of the Scout movement. The stamp is inscribed SCAUTISMO at left and POSTE ITALIANE L. 50 across the foot band.

Carlo Pontani designed the vignette: two Scouts sit in silhouette beside a campfire whose yellow and orange flames rise in the shape of a fleur-de-lis, with tents behind them against a muted green-blue ground. The lower margin reads I.P.S. - ROMA - 1968 beside the designer’s name.

The Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato printed 18,000,000 copies by photogravure in panes of 50, perforated comb 13¼ × 14, without watermark. Stamp size is 30 × 40 mm. The issue remained valid for postage until 31 December 1969.
