Series history

Iraq issued a 5 fils postal-tax stamp in December 1973 for the National Defence Fund. It is the 2 fils orange emblem-and-salute design of 15 December 1967, with two medallions linked by a knotted rope — a Scout fleur-de-lis with a palm in one circle and a three-finger salute in the other — overprinted in black typography دفاع وطني, with floral ornaments in the corners and a 5 fils surcharge. De La Rue had printed the underlying stamp by lithography, comb perforation 13, in panes of 50. The tax stamp was valid until 31 March 1974. It is the Scout design among a National Defence postal-tax series overprinted between 1967 and 1973.
