The issuing authority

Brazil issued the first postage stamps in the Americas on 1 August 1843, the Olho-de-boi (Bull's Eye) series. Correios, the federal postal administration, remains the issuing authority. Brasília replaced Rio de Janeiro as the capital in 1960, in the same years as the first Scout commemoratives.

Scout-themed issues have been ordinary stamps of the Brazilian post, not labels or agency products. Face values on the mid-century stamps are in cruzeiros; from 1994 they are in reais.

Scouting

Scouting reached Brazil in 1910, brought by naval officers who had seen the movement in England. Independent associations spread over the next decade. The União dos Escoteiros do Brasil was founded in Rio de Janeiro on 4 November 1924 and is the national body recognised by the World Organization of the Scout Movement.

The 1960 commemorative for the fiftieth anniversary of Scouting in Brazil takes 1910 as the starting year. Girl Guiding is organised separately, as the Bandeirantes.
