Series history
Romania issued eight semi-postals on 8 June 1937 for the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Uniunea Federațiilor Sportive din România, the union of Romanian sports federations. Domfil catalogues the set as 937.5/12.
Seven of the designs are sports: footballers, swimmers, a javelin thrower, a cross-country skier, an eight at the oars, a horse and rider at a fence, and King Carol II in hunting dress with gun and game bag. The eighth, the 10 lei top value, leaves sport aside for history and shows the founders of the union gathered round a table. Dimitrie Știubei drew six of the eight and Ioana Basarab the javelin and skiing values; all were printed in photogravure at the Fabrica de Timbre in Bucharest on paper watermarked with the crown and monogram of King Carol II, each in a run of 100,000, and all expired for postage on 1 June 1938. Every value carries a surtax, and the frames of several are lettered U.F.S.R.
The set enters the Scout and youth-movement catalogues on that emblem: Domfil lists all eight with the motif «Emblema / Emblem», indexing them by the union's monogram rather than by any Scout content — none of the designs shows a Scout. It sits in the catalogue as organised-youth material of the interwar Romanian state, alongside the Pioneer issues that followed after 1945.
Domfil also prices the set imperforate, at several times the perforated one. Further references are Michel RO 528–535, Scott RO B69–B76, Yvert RO 515–522, Stanley Gibbons RO 1352–1359 and, in the Romanian catalogue, 119a–h.
