Series history
On 3 July 1954 Romania issued three commemoratives for the fifth anniversary of the Young Pioneers organisation, founded on 30 April 1949. Domfil numbers the set 954.12–954.14.
All three are by Ion Dumitrana, printed in photogravure at Fabrica de Timbre in Bucharest, comb perforation 14, on paper watermarked RPR endless rows, each in a run of 2,000,000. The 20 bani black-olive shows a Pioneer girl tending a calf (Domfil 954.12 «Guía y ternero / Guide and calf», Michel RO 1474, Scott RO 994). The 55 bani grey-blue shows a girl carrying a sheaf of grain (954.13 «Guía / Guide», Michel RO 1475, Scott RO 995). The 1.75 lei carmine, in horizontal format 42 × 24 mm, shows Pioneers gathered around a globe (954.14 «Jóvenes exploradores / Young scouts», Michel RO 1476, Scott RO 996).
The programme on show has shifted again from the fourth-anniversary set of 1953: agricultural work and geography rather than tree planting, aeromodelling and the laboratory. Further references are Yvert RO 1347–1349 and Stanley Gibbons RO 2332–2334. The three values are catalogued here in rising face-value order.
