Series history
Egypt issued three semi-postals at Cairo on 25 July 1956 for the second Pan-Arab Scout Jamboree, held at Aboukir near Alexandria — the stamps and sheets carry the venue as ALEX. - ABOUKIR 1956, with the Hegira year ١٣٧٥ beside the Gregorian one. Domfil catalogues the stamps as 956.1/3 and the souvenir sheets as 956.4/5, describing every design as «Emblema / Emblem».
The three values each carry a Scout emblem within an Arabic-lettered frame: 10 + 10 millièmes green, 20 + 10 navy blue and 35 + 15 blue. Sadek Rafel designed them, Samir Amin Ibraham executed the artwork, and the Survey Department printed them in photogravure, perforated 13½ × 13. The printings were small — SOSOW records 134,813, 134,129 and 131,522 copies — and the stamps stayed valid for postage until 24 July 1957.
The two souvenir sheets are the rarities of Egyptian Scout philately. Both are 65 + 35 millièmes, one perforated and one imperforate, headed 2ND PAN-ARAB JAMBOREE 1956 and footed ABOUKIR - ALEXANDRIA. SOSOW puts the printing at just 1,037 copies, and explains why: a set of the two sheets was released only to buyers of 200 complete sets of the stamps. Domfil prices the pair at several hundred times the three-stamp set.
