Series history

Belgium issued two commemoratives at Brussels on 29 July 1957 for the fiftieth anniversary of Scouting and the centenary of Baden-Powell's birth. Domfil catalogues the pair as 957.14/15.

The 80 centimes sepia carries the two movements side by side — the Scout fleur-de-lis and the Guide trefoil, each flanked by stars, above the dates 1907 and 1957 (Domfil 957.14 «Emblemas / Emblems», Scott BE 509, Michel BE 1067). The 4 francs yellow-green shows Baden-Powell in Scout hat between two stars, taken from the David Jagger portrait — the same likeness the Netherlands Antilles used for their centenary set of the same year.

G. Ebinger designed both, L. Janssens engraved them, and the French Stamp Printing Office printed them in recess, perforated 11½, in panes of 30. SOSOW records 2,001,450 of the 80 c and 1,735,050 of the 4 fr, notes that 200 sets were numbered on the reverse, and gives the withdrawal date as 30 September 1957 — a two-month life.

Both values also exist imperforate.
