Notes

Baden-Powell in Scout hat beside the Brazilian Scout badge with the motto SEMPRE ALERTA, legend CENTENARIO do NASCIMENTO / BADEN POWELL and the Cross of the Order of Christ. Photogravure on granite paper, panes of 50. Domfil 957.7. Print run 5,000,000 (SOSOW).

Series history

Brazil issued a single airmail commemorative at Rio de Janeiro on 1 August 1957 for the fiftieth anniversary of Scouting and the centenary of Baden-Powell's birth — the same day the IX World Jamboree opened at Sutton Coldfield. Domfil catalogues it as 957.7 «Lord Baden-Powell».

The 3.30 cruzeiros carmine-lilac shows Baden-Powell in Scout hat and neckerchief facing right, with the badge of the Brazilian Scout association and its motto SEMPRE ALERTA at the left, the date 1957 below BRASIL CORREIO, and the legend CENTENARIO do NASCIMENTO / BADEN POWELL across the foot beside the Cross of the Order of Christ. Luiz Almeida Jr. and Waldemiro Puntar designed it, and the Casa da Moeda printed it in photogravure on granite paper — the same stock used for the 1954 International Patrol Camp stamp — in panes of 50, perforated 11½. SOSOW records a print run of 5,000,000, five times the 1954 issue.

Catalogue references are Scott BR C87, Michel BR 913, Yvert BR PA75 and Stanley Gibbons BR 961; the Scott and Yvert numbers carry airmail prefixes because the stamp was issued for air post.
