Notes
Portrait of Lord Baden-Powell, founder of Scouting. Airmail value. Domfil 957.3. Engraved and embossed, panes of 50, watermark star. Quantity 500,000 (SOSOW).
Series history
Cuba issued two commemoratives at Havana on 22 February 1957, Baden-Powell's birthday, for the fiftieth anniversary of Scouting and the centenary of his birth. Domfil catalogues the pair as 957.2/3.
The 4 centavos in green and red shows Scouts gathered around a camp fire (Domfil 957.2 «Junto al fuego / At the fire-side», Scott CU 565, Michel CU 518). The 12 centavos slate is an airmail value carrying a portrait of Baden-Powell (Domfil 957.3, Scott CU C152, Michel CU 519).
Cía. P. Fernández produced both, engraved and embossed — an unusual combination that gives the designs relief — in panes of 50, line perforation 12½, on watermarked star paper. SOSOW records 2,000,000 of the 4 centavos against only 500,000 of the airmail, which makes the Baden-Powell portrait the harder of the two. Further references are Yvert CU 449 and PA152, and Stanley Gibbons CU 803–804.
