Series history

These are poster stamps, not postage: a set of eight labels sold in a printed folder for one shilling at the Jubilee Jamboree, held at Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield, from 1 to 12 August 1957. The folder describes them as «primarily intended for affixing to correspondence envelopes and to letters», so that the jamboree would be «brought to the notice of a wide circle of people». They are catalogued here as cinderellas, alongside the official British issue for the same event.

The eight designs, each inscribed JUBILEE JAMBOREE · SUTTON PARK · WARWICKS · ENGLAND · AUGUST 1957, are: Brownsea Island camp of 1907; the fleur-de-lis between the dates 1907 and 1957; a portrait of Baden-Powell; the jamboree emblem, a Scout badge on a Tudor rose; the three-finger Scout salute; a group of Scouting symbols; a map of Britain marking Sutton Park; and hands clasped in the Scout left-hand shake before the flags of the nations.

The notes inside the folder explain the choices. The Tudor rose was picked because Scouting was born in England, and Sutton Park because Henry VIII had granted it to the citizens of Sutton Coldfield in 1528. The jamboree emblem appears superimposed on the emblems of the eight previous World Jamborees — England 1920, Denmark 1924, England 1929, Hungary 1933, Holland 1937, France 1947, Austria 1951 and Canada 1955. The folder expected 35,000 Scouts at Sutton Park, representing close to seven million spread over a hundred countries.

The eight labels are catalogued here in the order they appear on the sheet, reading left to right and top to bottom, with the complete sheet last. The folder cover, the printed notes and the sheet as issued are shown below as optional items. All nine pieces are in the collection.
