Series history
South Korea issued two commemoratives at Seoul on 27 February 1957 for the fiftieth anniversary of the Scout movement, together with a souvenir sheet. Domfil catalogues the stamps as 957.11/12 and gives the sheet its own number, 957.13.
Both stamps share a design by Bak Kang: a Scout in campaign hat looking to the right, the Korean Scout fleur-de-lis at his left and Korean lettering across the foot. The 40 hwan is dark violet and the 55 hwan red-lilac. The Government Printing Agency printed them by lithography — unusual among the jubilee-year issues, most of which were engraved or photogravure — in panes of 50, comb perforation 13½, on paper watermarked with zig-zag lines.
The souvenir sheet gathers both values under a Hangul heading, with 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDATION OF BOY-SCOUTS and the dates 1907-1957 beneath. It was issued imperforate only, and SOSOW puts the printing at just 500 sheets — rarer even than Egypt's Pan-Arab sheets of the previous year, and priced by Domfil accordingly.
SOSOW's table gives the second value as 50 hwan; the stamp, Domfil and every other catalogue read 55. Quantities were 500,000 of the 40 hwan and 200,000 of the 55 hwan. Further references are Michel KR 238–239 with block 109, Yvert KR 178–179 and Stanley Gibbons KR 293–294 with MS295. The two stamps are in the collection; the souvenir sheet is wanted.
