Series history
The Philippines opened the centenary year on 19 January 1957 with a 5 centavo commemorative at Manila, issued for the Girl Scout World Camp and the centenary of Baden-Powell's birth — one of the few 1957 issues to put Guiding rather than Scouting at the centre. Domfil catalogues it as 957.1 «Guía y campamento / Guide and camp-site».
The dark blue design shows a Girl Guide in profile beside the world trefoil on a staff, with tents ranged behind her, GIRL SCOUT WORLD CAMP arched above and PHILIPPINES POSTAGE below; the dates 1857 and 1957 run up the sides. The Philippine Girl Scouts Association supplied the design, and the Bureau of Printing produced it by lithography in panes of 100.
SOSOW records 450,000 of the perforated stamp and 50,000 imperforate, the latter catalogued as Scott PH 637a and priced by Domfil at twenty times the perforated one. Both are catalogued here, perforated first, and both are in the collection. Further references are Michel PH 613A and 613B, Yvert PH 451 and 451a, and Stanley Gibbons PH 798 and 798B.
