Notes
Emblem of the Boy Scouts of China — a fleur-de-lis carrying the national sun and a scroll reading 智仁勇, wisdom, benevolence and courage — over a ground of small fleur-de-lis marked BP 1857 1957. Engraved by Pao Liang-yu, panes of 100, issued ungummed. Domfil 957.10. Quantity 500,000 (SOSOW).
Series history
Taiwan issued three commemoratives on 11 August 1957 for the fiftieth anniversary of world Scouting and the centenary of Baden-Powell's birth. Domfil lists them under Formosa as 957.9/11.
All three share one design: the emblem of the Boy Scouts of China, a fleur-de-lis bearing the national sun above a scroll reading 智仁勇 — wisdom, benevolence, courage — set against a ground of small repeated fleur-de-lis each marked BP 1857 1957, with Chinese text down the left. Liang Li-yu designed it and Pao Liang-yu engraved it for the China Engraving & Printing Works, in panes of 100, line perforation 12. The values are 40 cents violet, 1 dollar green and 1.60 dollars blue.
Two production details set this issue apart. The stamps were issued ungummed, as much of Taiwan's output of the period was, and specimen overprints exist — the three values with 樣張 struck in red down the right margin are shown below. SOSOW records 2,000,000 of the 40 cents against 500,000 of each dollar value.
