Notes

A girl cadet in beret and sash standing under an archway, a lake and figures beyond. HEALTH 1d at the upper left and POSTAGE 2d at the upper right, NEW ZEALAND across the foot and the printer's line HARRISON AND SONS LTD., LONDON below it. Printed by Harrison & Sons, London.

Series history

New Zealand's Health stamps for 1958, issued on 1 October: a 2 d + 1 d in green showing a girl cadet under an archway and a 3 d + 1 d in blue showing a boy cadet sounding a bugle over a camp of bell tents. Harrison & Sons of London printed both, and the surtax went as always to the children's health camps.

The uniforms are those of the Brigades, not of Scouting. The girl wears the beret and sash of the Girls' Life Brigade and the boy the peaked cap and tunic of the Boys' Brigade — the church-based uniformed movements that predate the Scouts in Britain and were strong in New Zealand. No fleur-de-lis or trefoil appears on either stamp.

They belong to a Scout catalogue as neighbours rather than as members: the bugler at the camp, the tents, the drill and the outdoor programme are the shared vocabulary of the uniformed youth movements, and the annual Health issues drew on all of them in turn. This pair carries no Domfil number.

Both values were also issued in miniature sheets, shown below. Catalogue references are Scott NZ B55–B56, Michel NZ 383–384, Yvert NZ 371–372 and Stanley Gibbons NZ 767–768.
