Notes

Pioneers painting a large model rocket labelled ПИОНЕР

Series history

The Soviet Union issued five offset-lithography commemoratives on 19 May 1962 for the fortieth anniversary of the Leninist Young Pioneer organisation. Yury Ryakhovsky designed the set; three million of each value were printed in sheets of twenty-five on toned paper without watermark, perforated comb 12½ × 12.

The 2 kopek shows Pioneers taking the oath before Lenin writing at a desk and a red banner. The 3 kopek portraits the Pioneer heroes Lenya Golikov (1926–1943) and Valya Kotik (1930–1944). Two 4 kopek designs follow: Pioneers finishing a model rocket labelled «ПИОНЕР», and a hygiene inspection with a girl wearing a Red Cross armband examining a younger child's hands. The 6 kopek gathers Pioneers of different peoples around a globe, one of them sounding a bugle.
