Chief Scout of Greece in profile within a reef-knot frame
Series history
Greece issued five lithographed commemoratives at Marathon on 1 August 1963 for the 11th World Scout Jamboree. A. Tassos designed the set; Aspioti-Elka Graphic Arts printed it in panes of fifty on paper watermarked with a multiple crown. Perforations are mixed 13½ × 13 and 13 × 13½. The issue was withdrawn from sale on 31 July 1964.
The 1 drachma adapts Baden-Powell's sketch «Athens at dawn», with the Acropolis and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. The 1.50 drachmae carries the jamboree emblem. The 2.50 drachmae shows Crown Prince Constantine, Chief Scout of Greece, in profile within a reef-knot frame. The 3 drachmae pairs Lord Baden-Powell with Athanasios Lefkaditis, founder of Greek Scouting. The 4.50 drachmae depicts a Scout sounding a conch shell beneath the national flag. Print runs were 2.5 million (1 d, 2.50 d, 3 d), 3 million (1.50 d) and 1.5 million (4.50 d).
