Notes

Four Baden-Powell stamps on a green surround inscribed BOY SCOUTS OF NIGERIA and GOLDEN JUBILEE 1915–1965

Series history

Nigeria issued four photogravure commemoratives at Lagos on 1 January 1965 for the golden jubilee of the Boy Scouts of Nigeria, marking fifty years from 1915. Harrison & Sons printed the stamps in panes of sixty, perforated 14 × 14½. Stephanos Apostolou designed the 1 penny — Scouts climbing a rocky slope beneath the national Scout badge — and the 1 shilling 3 pence — Lord Baden-Powell above a Nigerian Scout saluting before a yellow fleur-de-lis and palm foliage. H. G. N. Cowham designed the 3 pence, a red Scout fleur-de-lis on a heraldic shield dated 1915–1965. W. H. Irvine designed the 6 pence, the Boy Scouts of Nigeria badge with a cascade of proficiency badges. Quantities were 120,000 of the 1 penny, 372,000 of the 3 pence, 374,000 of the 6 pence and 124,000 of the 1 shilling 3 pence. A souvenir sheet places four of the Baden-Powell stamps on a green surround inscribed BOY SCOUTS OF NIGERIA and GOLDEN JUBILEE 1915–1965; the sheet is imperforate with simulated perforations on the stamps.
