Series history

Mali issued five airmail commemoratives at Bamako on 4 June 1973. Cécile Guillame designed and engraved the set. The French Stamp Printing Office printed it by recess, comb perforated 13, in panes of 25. The issue was withdrawn from sale on 31 August 1973.

The 50, 70, 80 and 130 f are inscribed REPUBLIQUE DU MALI, POSTE AERIENNE and SCOUTISME. The 50 f shows five Scouts around a camp-fire before a large fleur-de-lis, one playing a flute. The 70 f shows two Scouts with right arms extended toward a flag, beside a circular fleur-de-lis badge. The 80 f shows Scouts hiking with packs, one carrying a large flag bearing a fleur-de-lis. The 130 f is a portrait of Baden-Powell in campaign hat, lettered BADEN POWELL 1857 - 1941. The 270 f is inscribed CONGRES INTERNATIONAUX DU SCOUTISME, NAIROBI and ADDIS-ABEBA; it shows a map of Africa with a fleur-de-lis and 1973, and a round dance of Scouts holding hands. Nairobi hosted the 24th World Scout Conference in July 1973.
