Series history

Tuvalu issued four commemoratives at Funafuti on 14 August 1977 for the fiftieth anniversary of Scouting. Each stamp is landscape, inscribed Tuvalu and Scouting, with the royal cypher E II R at upper right and a yellow Scout fleur-de-lis with two stars in a green disc at left. Ian Oliver designed the set. Format International Security Printers printed it by offset lithography, comb perforated 14, in panes of 25. The stamps were withdrawn from sale on 11 September 1977. Specimen overprints exist. Tuvalu had been the Ellice Islands of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands.

Printings were 35,146 of the 5 cent, 35,341 of the 20 cent, 35,154 of the 30 cent and 35,242 of the 35 cent.

The 5 cent shows four Scouts among palms by the sea; one holds a green flag with a yellow emblem. The 20 cent shows two Scouts paddling an outrigger canoe. The 30 cent shows three Scouts sitting under a palm-frond shelter on the beach. The 35 cent is a portrait of Baden-Powell in khaki and a campaign hat, arms crossed.
