Notes
Postage Scout design, stamp from souvenir sheet / sheetlet format. Photogravure by Waterlow & Sons. Domfil 949.2.
Series history
On 15 July 1949 Nicaragua issued a large multi-value commemorative programme to raise funds for a sports stadium and to publicise the 10th World Amateur Baseball Championships (Campeonatos amateurs de béisbol). The full set runs to some twenty-six designs (Scott 717–729 and airmails C296–C308); only two of those designs are scouting — a Scout motif printed both as ordinary postage and as airmail, each also available as a miniature souvenir sheet of four.
Domfil lists the Scout material under «10 Campeonatos Amateurs de Béisbol»: 2 centavos navy blue postage (Domfil 949.2 / Scott 718 / Michel 985) and 2 córdobas olive-brown airmail (Domfil 949.25 / Scott C307 / Michel 1008). Both were printed by Waterlow & Sons in photogravure. SOSOW records print runs of 200,000 for the blue postage stamp and 20,000 for the brown airmail stamp, with only 2,500 of each souvenir sheet (Scott 718a / Bl 2 and C307a / Bl 25).
For Scouts-on-Stamps collectors the interest is the Scout figure included inside a baseball / stadium charity set — not a jamboree issue. This catalogue keeps four pieces of the Scout designs: the blue postage stamp taken from the sheetlet format, the brown airmail single (C307), the brown airmail souvenir sheet (wanted), and the blue postage souvenir sheet. The ordinary sheet-printed blue single once listed separately is not retained as a catalog piece here.
Waterlow specimen overprints (diagonal «SPECIMEN» with security punch) on the blue postage and brown airmail Scout singles are shown only as optional related images from the collector sheet (SCOUT-1949-NIC-01.5 / 01.6).
ATA 1964 confirms the dual purpose — funds for a modern national sports stadium and honour for the 10th World Series of Amateur Baseball 1948 — and notes that although the stamps are dated 1948 they were not issued until 1949. The Scout design is the same on the blue postage and brown airmail values except for stamp size; there were souvenir sheets of four identical stamps for each of the twenty-six designs in the sports programme.
