Landscape. Inscribed 50 Years of Scouting • 1928–1978, SOLOMON ISLANDS, 45 c and EIIR. Captioned Canoeing. Three boys in a canoe on calm water, one paddling. A diamond panel at right. Offset lithography, comb 14, 38 × 25 mm.
Series history
The Solomon Islands issued four commemoratives on 15 November 1978 for fifty years of Scouting there, 1928–1978. Each stamp is landscape, 38 × 25 mm, lettered 50 Years of Scouting • 1928–1978, SOLOMON ISLANDS and the Queen’s EIIR cypher, with a fleur-de-lis in a rope circle at lower left.
The 6 cents, captioned Firelighting, shows two Scouts kneeling to light a fire. The 20 cents, captioned Camping, shows a thatched shelter, Scouts and a green flag among palms. The 35 cents, captioned Solomon Islands Scouts, shows three Scouts in khaki and red neckerchiefs, with a canoe silhouette at right. The 45 cents, captioned Canoeing, shows three boys in a canoe, one paddling.
The designs were taken from local artwork and finished by Waddington Studios. The House of Questa lithographed the set, comb perforated 14, in panes of 50 as two blocks of 25 with a gutter, on paper watermarked Crown over Block CA in diagonal rows.
